“A New Space for Growth for 150 Children in Schiffweiler”

19. December 2023

Signing of Cooperation Agreement Paves the Way for New Daycare Center.

In Schiffweiler, a new space for growth is opening: Expected to open from summer 2026, up to 150 children will find childcare places in three nurseries, four kindergartens, and one mixed-age group. With the signing of the contract on December 19, 2023, the participants from the municipality, district, and provider laid the foundation for the daycare center of tomorrow.

At first glance, it’s not immediately apparent what this gathering entails. However, the signing of the contract contains a truly joyful message for families in and around Schiffweiler. Because it’s now confirmed: The new daycare center is coming. And with it, up to 150 childcare places in a total of eight groups.

“Today’s contract signing is not just a formality, but the living realization of strong cooperation between the municipality, district, and provider. Here, we are collectively laying the foundation for a promising future, where we work hand in hand for the well-being of our community,” says Mayor Markus Fuchs.

In close collaboration with the municipality of Schiffweiler, the district of Neunkirchen, and the Ministry of Education and Culture in Saarland, the non-profit organization littlebigFuture is creating new educational and childcare space for children from the region. Expectedly, from spring 2026, up to 150 children in three nurseries, four kindergartens, and one mixed-age group will bring the new facility to life. The eighth and mixed-age group will be fully occupied by the district, which is financially involved. “The creation of the new daycare center with a wide range of early childhood education and care services underscores our continuous commitment to the future of our youngest citizens in Schiffweiler and the district of Neunkirchen. Therefore, the district of Neunkirchen is pleased to participate in this innovative project,” says District Administrator Sören Meng.

The project, which has been pursued for more than two years, is now in a decisive phase. The profitability calculation by DKC Kommunalberatung GmbH in May 2023 showed that the operator model with littlebigFuture gGmbH stands out as the economically advantageous procurement variant. Thus, nothing stands in the way of the project anymore.

With the contract signing on December 19, 2023, the cooperation partners laid the groundwork. For families and interested professionals, it’s now interesting to see what will be created based on this foundation.

Built-in Features: Quality of Stay and Energy Efficiency
The daycare center of tomorrow is planned in Heiligenwalderstraße in Schiffweiler on a plot of approximately 5,887 m² including a 2,800 m² outdoor play area. The modular construction and division into clusters (see sketch) ensure that the daycare center visually integrates well despite its size and also invites comfort inside. The single-story clusters for the groups are arranged around a large communal room with daylight. This atrium serves as a central meeting point and place for exchange in everyday daycare life. Outside opening hours, the flexible multi-purpose room will also be available to the municipality’s residents for courses and gatherings.

Modular wooden construction, straw insulation, clay and lime plaster, and green roofs with photovoltaic elements for self-consumption of electricity by the daycare center ensure a healthy indoor climate. The large outdoor area will be designed in a nature-friendly manner and thus become an adventure space for the little explorers. It is accessible at all times via terrace accesses from the groups so that the children can play outside in nature as often as possible in their pedagogical daily routine.

In addition, a smart technical equipment also relieves the daycare team in everyday life, for example in information management, educational documentation, and communication with parents.

Educational Focus: Exploring the Living Environment Independently
Building on the pedagogical guiding principle “I am who. I can do what.”, the littlebigFuture team accompanies the children in their daily lives and provides them with security and safety as they independently explore their living environment. Whenever possible, the children encounter nature and develop a long-term awareness of sustainability in this rich educational space. Likewise, exploring and researching the digital space is part of their everyday lives. The focus is on creatively dealing with digital tools and consciously assessing their possibilities.
